I need a crown molding shaper cutter to make a gooseneck molding. What do custom one-of-a-kind carbide tipped shaper cutters (3/4″ bore – about 2-1/4″ tall) typically cost? Any recommendation of a manufacturer in the U.S. (preferrably New England). Thanks.

Welcome to Knotts. There are lots of guys and gals here who can answer almost any question. How about posting some basic info about yourself? Are you in the woodworking trade, an advanced hobbyist or just doing one very involved project?
I've had great success with Ridge Carbide in Lyndhurst, New Jersey. Sorry, I'm not near my catalogs so you will have to google them. Since the cutter you want is a custom made job, be prepaired for a $250 + price tag. Their service was great. I sent them a piece of wood I needed to reproduce and the cutter was dead on accurate, and cut my wood like a hot knife through butter. Everything was handled over the phone and they were quite pleasant to work with.

Have you tried a millworks company? Many of them will do custom runs for a much better price.
Several posters over at Breaktime are shaper users as well and you may be able to get some additional pointers by posting this over there as well.

Everything fits, until you put glue on it.
I have bought several custom knife sets for a corugated back insert head I have. Knives for usually cost around $30 - $50/in plus material costs. It sounds like you want a custom cutter body too. That can add to the price as they are more difficult to produce. A 3/4" corrugated back head is not all that expensive. I think the 3/4" x 3" one I bought two years ago was $200 (CAN). LRH Enterprises, FSTool, Frued, Amana, CMT and a host of others can make you a custom cutter. I would start calling some of the industrial woodwork supply companies in your area. You will need to provide a drawing (.dxf file or .dwg file is also helpful).
Old Dusty might be able to give you some guidance if you want to make your own. He does for small runs like you are thinking.
Good luck.

Unless they have quit doing it, they can make shaper cutters to whatever profile you want. Tell Ken that Alan sent you and he'll buy me lunch at the cafe if I am lucky.

Hi JKG ,
Before you get too far I would ask a few questions about the shaper you want to use .
Another is the ht of the cutter plus the nut and quite possibly a bearing to guide against the curved molding also , how tall is the spindle above the table .
Once you locate a cutter source get a dimension and make sure your machine will meet the requirements .
Lower Hp can be a factor also , if you have to lay an auxiliary larger top over your shaper table for support this too will take some space from the spindle ht .
