Hello All!! I would like to make my own cutting gauge, If I am not mistaken one of the wood working magazine’s had an article on this not to long ago.
I would like to use hard maple or mahogany. Has anyone out their made one who would like to share some thoughts and sketches along with sources on where to obtain different items.
Thanks
Jack

Sparky,
If you use mahogany, best to plan on facing wear areas (face of fence) with brass, to eliminate wear over time.

Hi Jack,
I have made one out of quarter sawn white oak, its what I had lying around. I saw an article in woodwork magazine a couple of months back, I did not buy it, just remembered what I could.
Anyway, I used a drill bit ground, sharpened and polished for the blade. No particular size, just one that looked right, and I drilled the hole in the stock using the same bit.
I made the fence 3/4" thick with a 3/4" sqare hole in it for the shaft that holds the cutting blade. the guage is locked into place with a wedge, the same way that plane irons are locked into palce on wooden hand planes.
It is really pretty easy to make one. The next one I make will have the hole routed so that the part that goes through it will actually be a little thinner but wider.
One last thing, orient the blade so the the round part the the bit, verses the ground side is toward the fence, that way it will pull itself into the work piece.
I think they are great to use as are wooden handplanes and not difficult to make. I am probably not very clear in my explanation, sorry, but I hope it helps.
I made this one having being inspired by Woodjoy's design. This can be used on a straight or curved edge.
