My first thought would be to use a bandsaw. In order to keep the post in the same orientation during the cut I'd build some sort of jig and attach it to both ends (assuming you don't want screw or nail holes in the outside surface).
If you need to use the table saw, this is a little more challenging because you'll have to make one cut and then flip the column 180 degrees to cut the opposite side. You'll need some sort of jig here as well. I'd probably make this one with a 2X8 on each side (with the 2X8's ripped down to 6 inches wide ... exactly the same as the column). I'd put a piece of plywood about 9 inches wide by 6 inches high on each end, and screw it to the 2X8s and to the post, keeping the screws well away from where the saw blade will make its cut. Make one cut, turn the piece over (keeping the same 2X8 against the fence), and make the other cut. Your 10 inch saw should be able to handle it if I remember correctly (I think they can make a 3 inch cut).
If you do decide to use a saw, I'd probably make the 3 inch cut in two pases. Take 1.5 inches away in the first pass, and then raise it all the way up for the second pass.
