the other day I was watching Woodworks with David Marks… he was talking about a cutting solution that he soaks his files and rasps in to clean out the lodged saw dust. Does anyone know what the name of such a solution would be… other than WD40?

I believe he said acid, But he does have a www. site where you can find the answer. Didn't he say something about etching ?

The old timers way of sharpening files was to simply soak them in battery acid.
thanks... that makes sense.....as I was pondering the situation with the files and rasps in my shop (school shop)... I realized I had a cleaning/solution set up that was provided by the school district.... I tried a couple files with the solution and found that it worked well... since it's set up as a degreaser for tools it should be okay... never thought about using it for cleaning sawdust...Hopefully this will take care of some of the frustrations that my students were having with their files.....Thanks again for both replysDennis
