>>>Hi, I live in an old carriage house with bypass sliding garage doors(rotten) and I’m trying to get my act together to rebuild them. I would like to make mortise and tenon frames with sunburst panels on the lower 2/3 and glass up top, with different woods for the sunburst(stained). In thinking about this project I’ve come to the conclusion that cypress is the perfect wood to build the frames out of, unfortunately, I live in Ma. and the nearest cypress trees are 500 to 1000 miles away. the local lumber suppliers don’t stock very much of it and my doors are 10/4 finish thickness and no one carries any of that.the shipping charges from down south are $300.-$500. and I won’t even get to pick it out(I hate that, I refuse to let any wood suppliers deliver cause they just don’t care like you or I would) I’m willing to travel as far as georgia, maybe even northern fla.to pick it up but I am unable to find a source for dry(would like kiln dried but would settle for air dried), preferably quartersawn, rough is fine, in fact preferable cause then I can do final straightening when I’m ready. what I need is 3@ 3″x10″x10′ and 9@ 3″x7″x10’can any of y’all( a little southern touch)help me out? my reasoning for cypress is 1-rot and termite resistant, 2-strong and relatively hard for a softwood but light(unlike redwood or cedar which dents if you give it a piercing look) also, I’m thinking pupleheart layered over some lighter t&g wood for the sunbursts-2 panels in each door approx. 3&1/2′ x 4&1/2′ each. anyone with any thoughts about problems I might have with different woods reacting differently together? I know this was a long poser but I thought I might pre-answer any questions. any help on a supplier for the cypress would be greatly appreciated! thanks, Bill

Bill,
Being that you are in Maine and surrounded by some of the finest boat builders, in the country I am surprised that you are having difficulty finding cypress. Below is just a small list of boat builders that might be able to help:
Hodgen & Sons, East Boothbay
Billings, Stonington
Brooklin Boat, Brooklin
You also might try http://www.woodfinder.com or you could give M.L. Condon Co. a call at 914-946-4111 they are located in White Plains, NY. Let's see, who else....Oh yes, there is also Boulter Plywood Corp. in Sommerville who handles lumber.
For your panels try to use wood that has close to the same properties as the cypress. Since you are doing a sun burst this panel should "float", IMHO. Hope this helps.

*>>>actually I am in Massachusetts(ma.) Maine is (me.)
*Bill,Ah, I misread, there are even more in Massachusetts, boat builders that is. Just trying to help, cypress is a very desiriable wood used in planking hulls. That is why I am steering you in that direction.Dano
*Dano, I tried every one of your suggestions and no one carries 12/4 stock. 4/4 and/or 8/4 seems to be all that anyone in New England carries. I tried Holt and Bugbee, Kiever-Willard, Downs and Reader, Anderson Mcquaid, HK Hardwoods and even Diehl's(major league ripoff prices but quality stuff)and-zilch! I went thru woodfinder before I wrote to FWW and nothing so far although not all of my e-mails have been answered. HV&TG down in Ailey Ga. did write to say that they could supply it but we are still trying to confirm if we are talking about the same thing and theirsis only partially air-dried. I don't feel that I can just order it(over a $1000.)sight unseen and it's a 2000 mile round trip! I feel strongly enough about using the cypress that I'm willing to do it but I sure wish there was a shorter alternative. In addition to all the above I,ve done several searches looking for cypress and even down south most of the places don't have pre-cut stock in 12/4. cypress is so pretty and versatile that I can't believe I'm the only one who wants to use it for stuff like this.somebody out there has to know where I can find clear dry 12/4 cypress!?!
*Bill,The only other suggestion that I have is try reposting on the main board because of the higher traffic. I too am surprised that you have been having such a difficult time finding what you need. Sounds like you have so much invested in your search, that it would really be a bummer to find another alternative. Any who good luck, I hope you find what you want.Dano
*Bill,I thought I would extend a little southern hospitality. There is a small sawmill in Cairo, GA that specializes in cypress lumber. I don't know if they have a kiln, but they do have cypress. You might want to give them a call at 912-377-1477. Good luck.Marvin Smith
*There is a lumber company in Memphis that carries cyprus. Their web address is http://www.cypressusa.com. Check it out and see if they can help.
