hi,
I’m thinking about building a small bookcase for the rec room .. What is the best way to cut Dadoes in long boards (71 inches long) so that they line up properly when I go to insert the shelves. I want them all at the same height. I don’t think It’s a good idea to cut dadoes on long panels using the table saw. Radial arm saw would be great but I don’t have one of those. However I do have a fixed router. Any tips for setting up the router and laying out the dadoes?
One other question…. If I’m using 3/4 inch pine lumber is it alright to cut the dado 1/3 the width of the board? ( 1/4) or is better to cut it 1/8inch deep?

Have you considered using a router? I have had pretty good luck using an aluminum fence similar to one you would use as a fence for a circular saw. IMHO there is a safety issue trying to feed a board that large through a dado setup on a table saw.

router with a strait edge clamped to the boards. line up both boards so you cut are even.
use 1/4 inch deep or even 3/8 inch.

Wendy,
For a couple of years I cut my dados with the router and straight edge...as Dabney suggested...putting both boards side by side and routing straight across. Now I do them on the TS..I don't see the danger....but either way will work well. You might want to consider a 1/2" wide dado and put a tongue on your selving...it provides a bit of a shoulder for additional strength...
