I posted a thread a little while ago about working with dogwood and got many responses regarding how scarce dogwood for small spindle turnings, let alone furniture building. Well, I’ve got about 300-400 bdft of it in my garage. Most is 2-1/2″ thick, but some is 1-3/4″. Widths range from 7″ to over 14″, including the rough waney edge. Take a look at the attached pics. I’ve ripped a number of boards with a skil saw and this dogwood seems to be very nice to work with. A very hard wood, but cuts smoothly.

Chris,
LUCKY DOG!
I can't open the pics (dial-upper) but the stuff sounds great. You have something that the average woodworker will never get to see, much less use.
Good luck with the upcoming projects (was it a table?) and keep us posted.

Here you go Mapleman. Resized for your viewing pleasure. ;-)

I've never seen dogwood before - it looks a lot like walnut from what I can see. True....?
The dogwood I have cut into on my property looks like boxwood (very close grained) but has the color of pearwood (slight pinkish hue).
It reportedly makes nice tool handles, and holds up well to mallet abuse.

Ebonized it makes excellent fingerboards for stringed instruments. And a lot cheaper than Rosewood or Ebony.
Interesting tale told to me by a customer about Dogwood.
It supposedly was the wood Christ made his cross out of ( hence the blood red Cross in the white flower) and "ye who, works with dogwood shall be destined to sufferage" or some such nonsense.
Sphere,
It supposedly was the wood Christ made his cross out of
That's the story I heard as well. Also, it was supposed that from then forward, the trees only grew twisted and small, and were of not much use.

Sphere,
Where outside of Richmond, Ky. do you reside? Didn't know there were any amatures around.

You're right - it does look a lot like walnut. This particular dogwood has some nice dark colouring on some boards. I'll try to get a good picture of the grain when I get it planed down. Just have to set up my new DJ-20 8" Jointer first...Chris @ flairwoodworks
Nice stuff, you better sticker it up ASAP though !
Congratulations !
