I caught a lathe gouge in a new felt wheel and gouged about a half inch furrow in the wheel surface. Is there a safe way to resurface the wheel? I tried my diamond wheel surfacer, but it just got hot without removing much felt. I’d really appreciate any advice you all might have. Thanks!

Sandpaper will work. I've used a belt sander to recondition felt wheels. While the wheel is spinning apply the belt sander running in the opposite direction.
How clever you are, Rick! Thanks much for the idea--let's see if I can pull it off without causing any more damage! I've got a bit of klutz built into my nature!
I wonder if a sanding block with a coarse grit paper glued on might not work just as well--I'm pretty sure my belt sander won't fit in the space without first removing the tool rest from my bench. I'm going to try it that way first! Thanks for the idea--sandpaper is cheap and I've got lots of it.
I wonder if the grit might become inbedded in the wheel and if so, how to best remove it after I've gotten the wheel resurfaced?
Did you have the wheel turning the wrong direction??
Geez, I don't think I did, woodcrazy. My grinder only spins toward me and the felt wheel is on with the arrow spinning toward me.
I think I just got the gouge too low on the wheel--happened extra quick, the way things like that tend to!
Made me a lot more careful after that, for sure!
If you are using it on a regular grinder you should have the tip of your tool facing down and rotating away from the tip. Take the tool rest off. Some people turn the grinder around for proper rotation.
Good grief, well there you go! I guess good sense should have told me that. I've rarely used the felt wheel, as I'm pretty spoiled by my Tormek, but I wasn't in the mood to regrade the Tormek wheel so used the felt wheel instead for a light touchup.
Had I done it properly, I'm sure the felt wheel would have done a nice job. Since my grinder is bolted to the bench, I'll try grinding down on the felt wheel from now on. Thanks much for your help.
