I have a customer who wants me to make a bathroom vanity. No problems with that.
I was telling her about making up ‘Danish oil’ to suit the purpose. I can recall reading an excellent post on this once here, but a search doesnt turn up anything.
From memory…..mix thinners, linseed oil and urethane. More urethane = tougher surface and higher build, more oil….softer, lighter etc.
Can anyone be more specific?
Thanks
Whatever it was……………..I didnt do it.

AJinNZ,
You've got it about right...1/3 of each varnish, BLO, thinner and substitute raw tung oil for the BLO if you want a Maloof finish. Perhpas more important is application technique and giving things time to dry. I followed the below instructions religiously and after about 6 months what has evolved is quite beautiful....not sure for a bathroom though.
any chance of converting the attachment to a .jpg? or .pdf

maddog3,
Sorry, for some reason I can't convert to a PDF format on either the desktop or laptop. There is probably a freeware somewhere I'm unaware of ...lol
That's Ok ! JP made one for usThanks for trying though BG, I can't wait to give it a go
Do a Google for pdf995.
It's a printer driver that is very simple to use.
To convert from nearly any application, you simply select PDF995 as your printer, then print the document/image/whatever and it will be converted to a .pdf file.

Use whatever tool needed to Git 'r Done!
KiddervilleAcres,
Thanks, I think that'll work...
The formula is as stated already. Equal parts of varnish, mineral spirits and boiled linseed oil. Wipe it on heavily, let it set for 20-30 minutes and wipe dry. Let it dry overnight and do it again the next day.
It's a nice, close to the wood finish but it's very soft and not too durable. I would not use it in a bathroom. It has little water or water vapor resistance.
Varnish is a much better choice for a bathroom if you want a clear finish.
Thanks for the replies.
The customer had been to the local hardware shop, where the attendant had told her Danish oil was the perfect brew for this application. I didnt agree and told her the various properties of such a mix and the reasons why it was not the best.
Also told her if she was really bent on using it she could save a fair bit by mixing her own. I was not entirely sure I could remember the recipe so asked you nice folks.
She has decided ( after much urging from me ) to use a polyurethane over stain.
Whatever it was.................I didnt do it.
AJinNZ,
I just finished a piece of mahogany with BLO, shellac and then Min-wax wipe on Satin ....very close to the Danish Oil look.
