I have a friend who wants to stain a large cherry mirror frame “dark”. I rarely stain cherry and don’t know much about doing so but am thinking that he will have to mix stain and test it on a sample to get a dark stain that suits him. This is a process that usually requires several tries and that I consider tedious.
I know that cherry darkens with age and some times results with an uneven (blotchy) stained finish so any tips will be greatly appreciated.
Cordially,
KY. Dave

A powdered water soluble dye is likely the most effective way of getting cherry dark while reducing the amount of blotching.
Since each piece of wood is different, and since everyones idea of what "dark cherry" should look like differs, there really is no way around making several tests. That just comes with the territory.
