I’m turning a redwood slab into a desktop. This will have an inlay of wenge across it which is filling in a defect. The redwood has very warm colors, and the dark brown of the wenge (as beautiful as it is) is clashing a bit. So I’d like to stain the wenge to make it as black as possible, while still ideally keeping the beautiful lines of grain visible.
Any suggestions for an appropriate finish here?

Try heat treating it. I have turned white oak, cherry, and ipe black as night in the oven. I wrap them airtight in aluminum foil and heat at 400 degrees for 2-4 hours. The photo is ipe.
Oh neat, I had no idea. I'll try a little sample and see how it turns out.
You need a dye, not a stain. Transtint makes a black wood dye but thats kind of expensive for a one time use. Some people use India ink to make wood black.
