The banister and balustrades in my home are oak, sealed and coated with a clear lacquer and whitewashed to show the grain. I would like to stain them a darker color. How would I go about this without stripping the existing finish and not looking like a painted surface?
Thanks,

A tinted lacquer would be about the only way to make it look like it's been stained if you're adament about not stripping off the existing finish. But, the white glaze in the pores likely poses an insurmountable problem. Getting enough color to obscure the white glaze likely will leave it looking painted. Not to mention that you'd probably exceed the recommended dry film build of lacquer - meaning that it'd chip relatively easily.
