I have an old Rockwell/Delta 14″ band saw and want to get decent dust collection from it. The stock method is pretty worthless IMO and I was wondering if someone knows of a means of collection out there that actually works. Thanks.
Be safe,
Ken

I have one of the auld rockwells. No serial numders can be found.
Using a hole saw, I bored a hole in the back casting,on a line tangent to the outer rim of the bottom wheel. The suction line of the shop vac.plugs into this hole. I also used a strip of rubber door strip to seal the bottom door.
This does a passable job on my saw. I considered putting the hole in the door of the bottom wheel, but it would have been in the way when changing blades.

Hey Ken,
I was just looking at the Oneida web site, and they have a huge amount of photos of peoples shops. Some very nice installations, including to band saws. Bet you could pick up some useful ideas over there. I did. Very impressive company IMHO.

Like Pat, I too, have an ancient Delta 14", and the dust flies all over... I've tried assorted approaches, but have not tapped into the lower wheel area as I've been told that this sucker is too valuable to hack up.
New lower wheel covers are available, tho putting a pickup there would, as has been pointed out, be a hassle. Louis Ittura (888.722.7078) puts out a fabulous catalog that has more information than in books that cost real money, and on page 16 he has a dust collection gizmo for the Delta, which is, I believe, a standard Delta device. He does note that for older saws, the lower wheel cover will need to be modified. He also comments that bandsaws may require as much as 750 SCFM to keep up with the dust.
I know I sound like a broken record, but if you have a bandsaw, you ought to have his catalog.
Thank you all for your replies. I do not have the Iturra catalog but will call today and request one. The big problem with DC on older tools is that the dangers of wood dust were not known when the machines were built and so only passing interest seems to be shown in the design. I will figure something out after looking at photos and trying various ideas ... if I come up with a method I'll post some photos.
Be safe,Ken
"the dangers of wood dust were not known when the machines were built" - Yup, that's what got "Poppie" way before his time. :-(
