Still need help with chair decal.
*Mask it off and re-finish around it. I assume it must be a decal of historical significance - perhaps a Stickley factory decal or something along those lines? If it is, I personally would not remove it. Fashion a piece of cardboard with double-sided tape to put over the decal while you are working near it. The assumption is that it's in a inconspicuous place (it's a decal, right?) and if you have a small area around it that does not get refinished then no big deal.
*I think the question is about decals that were "fashionable" in the 60's of flowers, eagles, etc.--you wet the paper and it slid off onto the furniture. Not "historic" at all!! Sanding might work. How about soaking a cloth in vinegar and placing over the decal to see if it would soften the glue. Might have to mask off the wood around it.
*I am re-reading the question more critically and believe I may have misunderstood the historicity of the decal. Can't see any reason for re-installing it otherwise. Maybe Mark will come back and tell us.
*Just a small Manufacturers Decal aI would like to reuse. Any help?
