What tools are recommended for turning deep narrow forms (vases, as deep as 10″, as wide as 8″, with openings as small as 3″ dia). I’ve looked at some Sorby tools but the choices are many and I have little background to judge them.
Thanks,
Tom

hollowing tools
Take a look at the Jacofsky tools(Hollow Pro) in the Craft Supplies catalog. I'm currently using and enjoying them. Also, David Ellsworth and John Jordan make very fine tools that they use themselves.
Ciao
David Ellsworth had us make our own tools for hollow forms, they were the size of small harpoons, then he made us dance with our lathes, then we sat on our lathes like riding a horse. The harpoons had an off center flat turned into the end of the handle so you could index how the bit was oriented inside the form. I still have them and they still work.
I think a router can be a huge help for you. It's a great investment if you will make a lot of projects that are deep narrow in form. It's a bit pricey but it can handle the job easily. You can use different types of bits for different project types. -J.S.
