Hi all,
I’m new to all of this, as will soon become fairly obvious. Does anyone know of a resource (web or other) that defines abbreviations/acronyms such as 8/4, 6/4, D2S R1E, FASF1F, CVG etc.? Thanks in advance for any advice.

A book called "Pocket Ref" will define all these terms and more. It's available at most good hardware stores, probably not though at Home Despot and the like.
