I would like to use Deft laquer over a Watco finish. I have done this with an old oil finish (20 years old). I would like to know if anyone has experience with top coating a fairly new oil finish with Deft and what the results were. I like the color that natural Watco imparts. But I love the silky smooth coating that I can get so easily with Deft.

Doug, I have done this on some pieces and it workes very well. You just have to make sure that the Watco is completly dry, give it at least a week after the last coat, longer if you can.

I had same experience as Mike
DougSmith,
I've done it too, no problems..waited a couple of weeks after the oil..and put on some shellac under the deft.
ditto again. wait at least two weeks, and wipe down the piece every day since Watco can bleed out in some kinds of woods.
The key is to be sure the Watco is fully cured and it that no more than a couple of coats of Watco was applied.
If all you are doing is coloring with the Watco, you can use just plain boiled linseed oil. It's the BLO in the Watco that does the coloring. The varnish component in the Watco is only important if you are using the Watco as a stand alone final finish.
It's also the varnish component in any oil/varnish finish that causes the compatability problem with lacquers. Lacquers work very well over BLO.
