Delta 1172 Tenoning Jig Function of Top Hole
What is the function of the hole at the top of the tenoning jig(circled in yellow)? The manual provides no instruction, or at least I didn’t see anything.

Seems he has the manual..... its in the picture. Is the hole tapped, got threads? Could you then attach the clamp on the top? For? One of the handles? Did Delta offer any type of accessories for that model? If there is a hole and a machined flat spot there has got to be a reason you would think. If it's a hole for attaching something there would need to be a way to attach it. I guess that it is possible that it is a spew from the casting process that they then bored clean and ground down to make it look nice. They did things like that back in the day. These days they would just leave it a ragged hole. Is there a threaded hole in the bottom plate directly below that hole? It there some kind of fastener below that hole attaching the body to the the bottom plate? Could be an access hole for a screw driver maybe....
Looks like an old cardboard box to me. Never heard of a "soft close" tenoning jig! ;-)
Its only a name. A rose is a rose. That was a pretty standard tenoning jig from the Delta/ Rockwell Unisaw days. You bought the saw and as a sweetener sometimes the jig was thrown in as part of the deal. Same thing with my PM 66, the tenoner came with the saw. Since all the older Unisaws were right tilt only ,and if that is from that era, I wonder if that affects the function of this tenoner? Had a Unisaw back in the day ,the tenoner is a faded memory though. Didn't use it much as I recall, much like the one I have now ,although I did use it a couple of days ago.
I found this on the first page of the instructions for the tenoning jig _mj_ referenced. Possibly its describing the hole you're referring to. "A 1/2 inch hole in the top of the clamp body is used for holding a stop rod of any desired height and insuring tenons and grooves of equal length to be cut in the stock. The stop rod is secured in position by tightening the hexagon socket set screw provided in the clamp body."
a later model, no hole in top.
