I have a delta 15″ planer (X5 model I think – not the portable one). The plastic dust hood shipped with it works well, but broke the other day when a board fell off the planer and hit it on the way by. I can buy a replacement for $35, but it will just break again in a few months. Has anybody had any luck locating or fabricating a metal replacement? Also, wouldn’t it make sense to have the hood curved upwards and the hose connector facing towards the ceiling if the dust collector hookup drops from above? Thanks.

I made a hood for my Ryobi planer using a piece of ductwork I bought at a garage sale. I started by making a template using thin cardboard. A few rivets held things together. It's not very pretty, but it works.
Good luck,
Bill

Find a sheet metal worker near you. They may even do it for free is you bring a bottle of Scotch with you. Never met a sheet metal worker that did not love to stray away from the norm making something...
So, I made a model of what I thought I wanted from poster board and took it to a local shop. $72 and two weeks later, I installed the one on the picture I just added above. (Too bad pictures can't be added to comments like this one.) It works fantastic. I can probably take 2' off my hose, I don't need the reducer any more, and the machine fits tight against the wall when stored.
If Delta had sent something like this, I'd have happily paid $50 more for the machine. The broken plastic one is in the recycle bin.

"...I'd have happily paid $50 more for the machine." Crazy thing is, it would probably add only half that much to the price! That's an awfully nice planer to be sporting a plastic hood.
You can buy a metal one from Grizzly for $13.75. I'm sure you'd have to modify it a bit, but most 15" planers are very similar. The photo in their catalog shows it as black.
