delta 50-760 and 50-720- both clogging
Both machines tend to clog right where the 4 inch flexible hose enters the dust collector. the Delta 50-720 is connected to a powermatic 6 inch jointer and the 50-760 is connected to a dewalt 13 inch planner. I have used longer hose length to try to make the curve of the hose at large angle to lessen the clogging of the chips. I am really frustrated and am tempted to ditch both. each dust collector clogs chips right were it enters the dust collector. I saw an advertisement for the Oneida super dust deputy that uses a 4 inch hose and is targeted toward the inefficient portable dust collection systems. First I would like to fix my problems before buying another machine. Please offer your suggestions???

There is a usually a grill that is supposed to stop hunks of waste, rags, etc. from getting into the DC impeller. If you are planing white pine, it puts out ribbons of shavings that easily clog the grill. If you aren't putting floor sweepings in the DC and there isn't much chance of sucking up a rag, you can cut out the grill. Hardwoods don't cause the same ribbon shavings and are seldom an issue. This could be the problem.
You have given me an idea to cut the metal cross just before the dust enters the fan( impeller) . The grill is exactly where these dust collectors seam to jam.
The only reason that cross piece is in there is to keep the company lawyers and insurers happy.
It isn't there to prevent something large from getting into the fan, it is there to prevent the inattentive from putting their hands in the opening and getting their fingers mangled by the blower. All of the dust collector makers started adding the grills at about the same time around ten years ago, presumably as a response to accidents, before that no machine had the grills.
I should note that if you aren't paying attention and you put your hand right in front of the intake while the machine is on the suction is strong enough to pull your hand in, so the risk is real.
While sharp angles are one cause of problems, so is the loss of capacity caused by overly long hoses--it's a trade off. You might try shoter hose.
One of the downsides to the single stage DC. The super Dust deputy would be a better solution than the standard trash can separator as it should give very good 2 stage separation. The trash can style always allow a significant amount of fine particles carry over, so you end up having to fight with the second bag sooner or later.
My current DC does not have a screen so whatever gets in the hose goes in the bag. These DC's have material handling impellers which will tolerate a considerable amount of abuse. If most of your waste is coming directly from the machines, you will not cause any damages.
As Steve noted, keeping the amount of flex hose to a minimum will greatly improve performance also.
