Upgrading the 50-851 to current standards
Since I posted, I discovered that, through Mytek in Ottawa one can order the 1 micron upper filter bag for this unit for around $114.00 + tax (CDN). For that amount, it may be worth trying a canister, as discussed below in the original post:
Has anyone tried the after-market cartridge from Wynn Environmental? I am wondering if, given the amount of companies now selling cartridges, would it be reasonable to purchase one from a similar 2 HP unit with a 1500 CFM rating and retrofit it to the 50-851?
After reading the excellent "A Revolution in Dust Collection" article I am considering:
Replacing the existing cloth bag with a 1 micron or sub-micron canister style cartridge.
Replacing the bottom bag with plastic bags.
Adding a separator (such as the Dust Deputy cyclone mentioned in the article) to turn it into a quasi-two-stage collector.
Busy Bee in Ottawa, ON sells the basic type of trash-can lid separator and I don't know if that design is on part with the Veritas model from Lee Valley that has a more cyclone shape. The dust deputy sells for $289 Canadian at Busy Bee so it may be a while before I make that addition.
Any thoughts or advice on upgrading a single-stage in this fashion would be appreciated.
