I have a Delta 10 inch (model 36-220) miter saw. The blade will not rotate. The motor tries to turn but cannot. This happened very suddenly as opposed to a gradual failure. There are no wood chips hung in the blade housing. I can force it to turn with a wrench but it is difficult, jerky and sounds horrible.
Could it be the electric brake is engaged and stuck in that position?
Any advice is appreciated
Chuck

The one thing it's not is the brake. It's an electric brake, not mechanical, so there's nothing that can "stick."
Could be a broken motor brush, a damaged gear, or a bad bearing. Easiest first: unplug the saw, remove the brush caps, and check the brushes.
Kent,
Thanks
It is not the brushes -- I checked those. Based on the sound I suspect the gear.
I guess I will have to open it up an see.

Does the saw have an arbor lock for changing blades? While I doubt that the blade would turn at all if it were engaged, perhaps it has indeed gotten stuck in the locked position???

Dennis,
Unfortunately, it does not have an arbor stop. I checked the brushes to see if one was broken and lodged. I guess I am down opeing it up to look at gears and bearings now.
Thanks

Is it still under any kind of warranty? Meaning, if you start dissassembling the saw it might give the seller an out for it being worked on outside an authorized repair depot. Otherwise, guess that's the only option available is to start tearing the thing down.

Sounds like a bearing has broke up. Got to take it apart!!
