This will probably sound like a ridiculously easy question for someone. When setting up my Delta contractor saw, what is the best way to align the pulleys. The instructions say only to line up using a straightedge. What is the point of reference to which the the line formed by the straightedge should be parallel? Secondly, when aligning the splitter mount with the fixed washer on the right side of the blade, is it sufficient to hold the straightedge against the washer, loosen the set screws on the splitter mount, and move the mount until it contacts the straightedge? Lastly, I picked up a Dewalt 733 planer for $236 at Lowe’s. Seemed like a pretty good deal, and they were in the clearance area. Any idea why they would be in clearance?

Hi Paxton:
You need to index off of the pulley on the saw arbor. Leave the pulley on the motor arbor loose. Get your hands inside of the cabinet and hold your one end of a stiff metal straight edge flat against the saw arbor pulley. Now you should have the long end of the straight edge resting on the motor arbor. If your straight edge is rigid enough and you hold it tight against the saw arbor pulley, the straight edge should show you exactly where to tighten down the motor pulley.
BTW, if your saw is new, would suggest going to Woodcraft and get their machined pulleys and link belt. It sells in a kit for about $50. It REALLY reduces vibration and it includes good directions for properly aligning your motor and your pulleys.
Robbie,
Thanks for the help. I was considering stopping on the way home to pick up the pulleys and link belt. I have felt a couple of times like I need an extra hand or two when putting this together.
Why does he need the new pulleys? I have a Delta CS and all I did was change the belt to a link belt and now the saw passes the nickle test. I'd recommend that he save $42 and try just the link belt first, he can always change the pulleys later if he's not satisfied.
The Dewalt is on clearance because they are releasing a new model to compete with the Delta 13 inch 2 speed model. I have the same planer, works like a dream. You did get a great deal.
Glad to hear that it is as good of a deal as I suspected, and that it works so well. I read the incredibly detailed thread comparing planers, and thought this was the one I wanted anyway. Now, all I have to do is build a stand for it!
