I am getting ready to purchase a dust collector (2 bag type) at the ww show in Ottawa next weekend. After reading the postings concerning small dust collectors I am wondering if I am going the right route. I am now using a Sears shop vac connected to a 2 1/2 inch system. Doesn’t do a very good job. I was thinking of going from the new collector with 4 inches to the table saw and planer and then using the existing system (2 1/2 inch) to pick up the ras about 12 feet away and perhaps a sanding attachment.
Should I get the 1 hp or the 1 1/2 hp? and which of the above mentionned models are preferred ?
Thanks
Roger

Have you looked at the Jet canister models? So much better than a 2-bag system! Take a look here:

There isn't that much increase in CFM between the 1.5HP and the 2.0HP (about 100 more CFM). The price isn't a whole lot different either if I remember correctly.
I cannot imagine passing up this system for one that requires me to wrestle with a dusty bag, spewing dust all over me and all of creation. And, it filters down to 2 microns without having to go out and buy an after-market replacement bag the way you do with other DCs.

I got the jet 650. It does a good job. Very durable taken a lot of abuse ,mine is a blue color to give you a idea how old it is. but If I had to do it again I would shoot for a larger one maybe 1100 cfm. But it would be the Jet

I have a 2hp Enco (now Star) with upgraded felt bags. The new Jet looks promising but I would I be hesitant to be an early adopter. Pleated filters are going to need replacement sooner or later (except K&N's) and that monster is going to be spendy. Plus if they don't catch-on Jet may discontinue them altogether. On the otherhand you could probably adapt a felt bag if need be.John O'Connell - JKO Handcrafted Woodworking

"Plus if they don't catch-on Jet may discontinue them altogether." Uhhhhhh, not to worry I think. Rumor has it that at least two other major DC companies are about to introduce their own canister versions. I think there've been enough of the Jets sold to consider it past the consumer-testing stage.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)

I just read what you stated about two other companies getting ready to come out with filter cannisters. Now where does that leave Elco and myself with our current units?
It's just too over-whelming to keep up with. I'm going to sell all my WW'ing equipment and take up golf as soon as I can figure out if I need "left" or "right" handed clubs.
Bah... hum-bug...

P.S. ha..ha..
Careful Sarge. I know a few golf-aholics and keeping up to date equipment in your shop is probably cheaper! At least it takes a whole garage to hold $20k in machinery and tools. At the prices I see these guys paying for the latest and greatest clubs, training aids, and the rest of the paraphenailia you can fit $20k worth of golf stuff in the trunk of a Buick Regal. And that's before green fees.
I just wait for stuff to bust and then upgrade. If it ain't broke don't buy a new one. Just like the Elco, I waited and the 283 sucked it's head gasket and coolant and that was it. Goodwrench 330 hp Deluxe went in last Feb. I Need posi and really want a 700R4, just biding my time, sooner or later the TH350 will croak too. I'd do the rear end but don't want to do it again for the taller 1st gear. BTW any personal insight on Slick50 vs. Mobil1 vs. Syntech for a 4-bolt SBC? So far it's just had a steady diet of 30W.John O'Connell - JKO Handcrafted Woodworking

Our guys up in Tech Support could probably answer that better than I. Dial 1-800-Yearone and hit ext. 172 at the prompt. Do it before 3 PM PCT as we are EST in Atlanta. We're there 24 hours a day, but the switch-board goes down at 6 PM EST or 3 PM PCT.

I have the 2hp JET which I saw at the 2002 Calgary Woodworking show. It's the only one I've bought. I had a homebuilt one. I am quite happy with this one. I believe all the manufacturers offer discounts at the shows. Only problem I have is it has a large space requirement in my small shop. I also purchased a remote control later which is a worthwhile addition. IMHOP

Thanks for the input. Looks like it will be the new Jet cannister 1.5 hp model. Hope to see one at the show in Ottawa next weekend. Can't seem to find a distributor here in Montreal.

That Jet looks great, but a bit pricey, no?
I've notice that the Delta 1.5 hp now comes with a plastic bag for the bottom. Mine (3 years old) came with 2 cloth bags but I've been using contractor weight plastic bags on the bottom for the last 2 years. Much more convenient that way.
Where will yours set? In the shop or outside the shop? Mine sets outside on a covered pad. No noise and no bleed thru dust in the shop. Also much less messy using the disposable plastic bags. Setting outside also allows for use of the cheaper 25 micron bags for the top. I have no problem with neighbors compaining about noise.
Also, on my Delta, I had to replace the start and the run capacitor and the breaker switch after about 1 year of daily use. I think the Jet is probably the same in regard to these components. I would order extra and have then handy. Those components on mine were so cheap and cheesy as to be totally ridiculous. The motor is not a true TEFC motor. The centrifigual switch is outside the winding compartment subjecting it to the possibility of dust contamination. I think that is what made my capacitors blow. Now, I hit that end of the motor with my air hose when ever I change the bag.
