I am looking at wood lathes I would like to go with a big lathe but to much $ .
I’m looking at the Delta 14 in. {46-715} & the Jet JWL- 1442VS the floor model {708358K}
I like Delta and most all my tools are Delta but the Jet has a 1 hp. and cast iron legs Delta only 3/4 hp. and sheet metal stand.
I want to turn Spindles and Bowls.
I heard that Delta has had some problems with their Lathe ( but that is what I have heard about all the other Delta tools I have bought and very happy with)
The Jet has more # and power + more travel on the tail stock and more $.
Sure would like to hear from those who have the Delta 14 or Jet 14 Floor Model Lathe.
Thanks Ronnie

I've got the 46-715. It's been a really good first lathe for me. The more that I turn, the more I wish I had something a little heavier though to handle bigger projects. That is not saying anything bad about the lathe at all. It works great for what it's specifications say. It also comes with free lathe tools that are pretty decent for starting.
Other things that you must get are:
The only problem I had was that the lateral swivel handle broke on me. Delta sent me a new one pretty quickly. The lathe is super easy to setup (make sure you have help.. the motor is heavy). If you buy from amazon you get free shipping as well.
Best of luck
I've got the 14" Jet, with out the VS. I love it. In fact, I can't see the need for more than the number of speeds it has, so I couldn't justify the extra expense for the VS model. It's built like a tank.

With the swivel head turned how big a dia. on a face plate can the lathe handle?
What do you think about the rest extension is it solid when cutting?
Also how about the rest holder seem good and strong?
You say you wish you had something heavier? are you talking vibration?
How does the 3/4 hp. handle Bowl Turning
It looks like a pretty good Lathe wish I could try one out. I am sure it is a better than the old Boise Crane 12 in. lathe I have been using.

I've read from people that have turned 20 in bowls before with 5 in depth.. But really the limitation is dependent on a number of things... how heavy is the wood , what's the depth of the blank. I haven't quantified this and have not seen it quantified, but it's like lifting weights.. you start out small and then progress. You'll eventually know your limitations. Sorry this is the best I have on the subject.
>>What do you think about the rest extension is it solid when cutting?
Feels pretty solid to me. Although I've not tried a whole bunch of others out.
>>Also how about the rest holder seem good and strong?
The tool rest holder is good and strong. However, the tool rest itself has started to get knicks and stuff on it that waxing it doesn't allow the tool to glide over it. I don't know if it's a warranty issue or not, and I can't recall how the knicks were made... but if Delta doesn't replace it, I'll end up regrinding it.
>>You say you wish you had something heavier? are you talking vibration?
Yeah, but my laziness is partly the problem here. I do not own a bandsaw, so when I make a blank with my chainsaw it's usually not square or round for that matter.. so there is an imbalance that causes some vibration till it gets rounded. From talks with others, bigger lathes are more tolerant to out of balance blanks.

Great, I just made a bowl with a 13 in diameter and 6 in depth out of walnut.. Turned out great.

I think you get what you pay for with this model. But don't take my word for it.. look at some of the reviews online at amazon:

Some of those are negative... but I've not had the problems that those reviewers had and I use it almost every day.
Best of luck

I have had a Jet 14" for a while now , and really like it .
It does everything I need of a lathe , and the price is right
