Delta model 43-120 1/2″ spindle shaper
Does anyone have any experience with this particular Machine?
I have an opportunity to purchase one for a decent price ($200) with a few cutters included. I’m going to look at it tomorrow.
I can’t seem to figure out if it’s a 1 H.P. or 2 H.P., if it’s 1 H.P. I’m pretty sure I don’t want it.
I realize either way it sounds like a light duty machine, so I’m not sure if it’s worth it. On the other hand it wouldn’t see very heavy use. I know it was built sometime in the late 70’s from what I’ve found on the internet.
So anyone have or use one that cares to comment?
Thanks.
I’m also going to post this at Knots

I had one many years ago. Mine had a 1 HP motor, but 1/2 HP was also available. It actually cut pretty good because you had to feed the wood slowly as it was underpowered. With the Delta HD you tend to feed the wood too fast because you have plenty of power. Since you have less cuts per inch cut quality suffers.
It had a small table and was very unstable when moving using the retractable casters. The big motor hanging on the back caused the instability. I upgraded to a Delta heavy duty shaper, which I still use, and a Hammer saw/shaper combo has made it's way into my shop. I would probably past on the 43-120 and get a Jet or Grizzly medium duty shaper or a Delta heavy duty shaper.

Hi.
The one I have has a 1hp motor. I made a larger table for it out of a piece old laminate counter top.
I use it a lot for tonge & grove & stile & rail cuts. It does a fine job for those cuts with good carbide cutters.
Haven't used it for anything else.
I have had a #43-110 which I am sure is just an older version. The spindle was good for about 9000rpm using a 3/4hp 2850rpm motor. If you get the full set of solid 3 lip cutters or the full set of knives and moulding head it is a neat machine. Very small by todays DIY standards but it depends on what you want to do with it.
It also had two interchangeable spindles and a stub spindle insert- I think 5/15ths and 1/2inch, and had a reversing switch. Clock makers delight-especially if you can grind your own cutters for a small slotted collar. It also had a ring fence, and if you get the set of collars to go with the 3 wing cutters it is good for profile pattern moulding.
Today it will barely get a passing sniff from DIYers obsessed with horse power-but it is a good little machine. If it is complete, the basic machine with all the cutters , then for 200bucks it sounds good.
Why don't you contact Delta and get some facts off them? Philip Marcou
