I have a Delta 15 in planer that is 6 years old. In the past year the planer stalls when planing wide boards or deep cuts. It can only manage 1/32″ cuts on boards that are only 6″ wide. I replaced the blades, checked the belts and performed all the maintenance the owner’s manual suggested except changing the gear oil. Has anyone had similar problems? Do you think changing the gear oil will help?
Thanks for any help…

Roger, when you say stall, do you mean that the blades keep spinning but the board isn't drawn through? This has happened to me on a Delta. I took the gear cover off and found the key bar(?) that engaged the outfeed roller had fallen out. So that only the infeed roller was pushing the board through. Bill
Bill:
No the blades stop turning and the board stops moving. If I don't raise the blades the motor will pop the circuit breaker. The advance for the board is serated teeth that engage the board, from above, before the blades and that is working fine. The bed rollers are passive and I cleaned then to make sure there were no wood chips in them preventing them from rolling.
Any other thoughts?

If I'm not wrong that thing has a 3 hp motor, which should be next to impossible to stall with normal use. Have you checked the voltage that machine is receiving, perhaps the motor is on its way out. Changing the gear oil would seem the next logical step, but if that is the cause, I would think that the gears would be getting so hot that you would smell it. There are plenty on this forum that have that machine, wait for a few more to chime in and see.John

That's a good thought I'll check to be sure it is getting full voltage. It seems more like that than the gears.

I must be something in the drive belts or pulleys. Did you check the key on the pulleys, one might be spinning. Belt tension may be too slack. I'd leave the cover off and watch what is happening.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
I'll check but they are link belts and seemed correctly tensioned. It appears that it is the motor that stalls not the belts sipping.
Thanks Roger
So, what's the deal? What have you found out?John
What is the amp rating on the motor, what voltage are you using, and what's it plugged in to? Is it on an extension cord? If you grab the belt (with the power off), does everything move freely?
Pete
I've seen this one.. well I think I have anyway.. Its the dust chute. You cannot run that planner with the dust chute on it without a dust collecter hooked up or it will build up sawdust (I mean it really packs it in) in the final upper feed roller. It will eventually stop the motor dead and blow the breaker which sounds like whats happening with yours.
Don't run it until you've checked this because doing so will eventually destroy the upper feed roller. Take the dust chute off and the gasket if it hasnt melted down yet and clean it out. That should do the trick.
Hope this is the problem and you've caught it soon enough.
P.S. if you put the chute back on, don't worry about replacing the gasket it never fits right and ends up in the roller eventually.

I ran it to show my brother the problem The belt was slipping! How embarassing. The
tanks for all the advice!

That's Great! Thank god it wasn't the problem that I posted about. You're a lot better off just having to fix the belt problems.
Hey, that's a good problem to have! Thanks for the update!John
