Well, I just got a great deal on a Delta 22-580 planer. Lowe’s had them on clearance for $229, down from $519. Great deal, but no boxed items left. They sold me the floor model for $199 with no manual and no cutterhead wrench or knife transfer tool. Pardon my ignorance if this is an obvious question. I haven’t been able to get the silly thing out of my trunk to look at it, because the spouse hasn’t been told yet. Best to surprise her with my great deal after a weekend of relaxation you know!
Anyhow, I was wondering if the missing wrenches are absolutely necessary, or if it is possible to use ordinary wrenches as a substitute, as is very nearly always the case with power tools. They look a bit specialized from what I saw in the manual.
Thanks in advance.

The cutterhead wrench, while handy, can be replaced by two tools, as the wrench serves double duty. One end is a 5/32" hex or Allen wrench. This is used to rotate the cutterhead via the side access panel in order to lock the cutterhead in place. The other end is a Torx T25. This is used to loosen (and tighten as well) the seven screws that hold each blade to the cutterhead. The knife tranfer tool is nothing but a couple of strips of magnets wedged into a plastic piece that serves as a handle. It allows you to handle the knives without touching them.
Don't worry about the planer being in the trunk of your car. If the back seats fold down, I'm sure you can do all your planing right there in the car! From your wife's perspective, it'll just look like you are loading some boards into the trunk. Or better yet, get an inverter so you can run it off the cigarette lighter. Then you can pull the car around the corner away from your wife's prying eyes anytime you need to plane a few boards. Dust collection will be a must, perhaps tying it to the air vents if you can manage to reverse the flow. At any rate, happy planing and download the manual from Delta's website if you have not done so already.
Sounds like a back rub is in order before you spring the news!
One thing about the cutterhead wrench, it's l-o-n-g, which I find kinda useful. You could order the replacement parts from Delta. If you need part number, LMK, I'll look them up for you. Probably wouldn't cost you more that 10 bucks. The knife transfer thing is like one of those soft rubber profile-sanding-thingies with magnetic strips. Velcro on one side to hold it in storage on the bottom of one of the tables (or did I do that? can't remember).
Another heads-up: Delta tends to reallllly tight things down on their tools. I think I had to use a pipe-extension to get the planer blades off the first time. Same deal with some bolt I had to undo on their drill press.

Thanks for all of the replies. I was able to get the thing out of the car today (although the idea of keeping it there was appealing). Forestgirl, you were right on the money with the long wrench and tight screws. I was able to get the thing loose, but I had to keep the blade lock off to maneuver the wrench around, and it really tested the strength in my hands. I think I will spring for the oem tools so that I may keep my fingers in tact in the future.
BTW, I was able to make some chips with it, and the praise that I have always seen for the machine is well placed. It is definitely a "best buy" in my shop.
Oh, and I left some time to clean the house while the wife was gone to get some brownie points. I think a massage may be in order tonight...

Sounds to me like you have everything figured out (major brownie points for you!). I still have the Jorgenson Cabinetmaster clamps I bought last year hidden behind my cut-off storage bin, LOL. Am hoping by the time hubby notices them, he'll forget that didn't always have them.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
