Delta scroll saw – Quick Set blade changer
I bought a used Delta scroll saw 40-460. It has a quick set blade changer. The quick set works, but not very well. The C shaped spring falls off a lot and it seems to be difficult to insert the blade. Is the blade holder just worn out (not sure how old the saw is) and needs to be replaced by a new Quick Set? Are there other blade holders that work better? Is the Quick set a good idea that just doesn’t work? Thanks

Can't say for sure what your
Can't say for sure what your trouble is but I bought a new delta scroll saw some years ago and one holder just didn't work right. Finally took it apart and put together another way and it worked just fine. Could be that yours is just put together wrong.
Bill, I haven't found that
Bill, I haven't found that model yet, but if it's similar to the Delta I have, there's a small knurled knob just outboard of that spring that's a tension adjustment for the blade holder. Turn that clockwise **just a little at a time** keep closing, opening the blade holder lever until it presents a noticeable amount of resistance, but isn't super-hard to close.
I'll look for the model you cite and see if the parts look the same as mine.
Well, I still haven't found
Well, I still haven't found that model (are you sure about the model#?), but the 40-540 has a blade clamp similar to the little Shopmaster I have, so the post above should help (I hope!).
Do you have a manual?? You need to adjust both the blade clamp tension and the blade tension properly for things to work well. Are you new to scrolling??
Yes, it is a model 40-640. I went to http://www.owwm.com/home.aspx and found a manual. I think the saw was made around 1991. No wonder you couldn’t find it.
The upper blade holder does not match what’s in the manual. So I think the blade holder I have may have been a later addition.
I was putzing with it a little today and I think I may replace the holder. I have access to a small milling machine so I think I will just make something simple that is tightened with a wrench. I only paid $50 for the saw. It’s a 20 inch and the variable speed works. I made something for a lady at work and she gave me $50, so I already broke even.
I am new to scrolling. I plan to try my hand at marquetry and inlay someday, as soon as I finish my wife’s dulcimer and a couple of rocking chairs.
Thanks for the help,
Bill
What I wanted to pass along, since you're new to scrolling, is this tip: Buy some Flying Dutchman blades from Mike's Workshop. They are head-and-shoulders above any other blade in the market. Mike is a great resource also, can answer virtually any question you have. Here's his website:

Thanks for the blade info.
