Hey, guys, I bought the 3HP Delta ‘Platinum Edition’ shaper, slightly used. I haven’t even used it yet, but one question – – Why does the miter slot run perpendicular to the fence? Thanks.

Well, jeez, let's not all reply at once - - too many opinions gets confusing. Doesn't anyone out there own the 'platinum' edition?
Hmmmmmm, I don't own a shaper of any sort, but I did sleep in a Holiday......oh, sorry. I went to the Delta web site just for kicks, and all of the shapers there have "normal" miter slots (parallel to fence).

Thanks for the reply. You're right, the other Delta's are all the standard way (parallel). It's just the 'Platinum'. I've seen other Platinums and they're all this way. Also, it's pictured perpendicular on the owners manual. I just can't figure out the logic to it.

TR,
The fence can be mounted parallel to the miter slot or perpendicular. Check you manual it will show you how. As for the logic, well my guess is Delta assumes that if your using the miter gauge your doing end grain or short pieces. If you set the fence perpendicular then your running long (with the grain) pieces.
Doesn't make sense why you would want to have to switch the fence to me but we all know what happens when you assume something.
Hope this helps.
Len
Thanks for your reply, Len. I'll recheck the manual and get back.
Len, you're completely correct. It does seem a little inconvenient, but I see the reasoning behind it. Thanks.
I asked about this a couple of years ago myself. The pictures look odd. Here's what was suggested then. It must have something to do with the sliding table attachment which works the way you see the shaper pictured.
It's what was suggested to me anyway.

RIVERR1, thanks - - I'll have to look into that.
As you have leaned by now the fence can be mounted either perpendicular or parallel to the miter slot. I leave my fence parallel all the time as I use the fence to set and square my cope cut for accuracy.
As a side benefit, I can make one cut on the coping sled and set the fences parallel thereby avoiding a second setup for the sticking cuts
Very interesting, Joe - - and much appreciated.
The Fence can move! There are screws that Change the location of the fence.
TR,
I was looking into buying a shaper not long ago, and I was wondering the very same thing. If you look at all the Delta photos of that shaper, the miter slot always runs perpendicular to the fence. At first, I thought it was just a weird photo, but then I realized it's the way Delta designed it.
I assume, as people have written here, that you can move the fence. But the wider part of the table runs perpendicular to the miter slot, which is different.
