Is anybody familiar with the Delta TP300 (Shop Master) planer on sale at Amazon? They have it listed for only $220 with shipping. It’s supposed to have a locking head and two speeds. Is there some catch, or is this really a good deal? (My Ryobi AP12 is on the fritz and I don’t think it’s worth getting fixed any longer.)

Shop master is what they (delta) are calling the Serious Hobby Line. My guess its the same planer/tools as they had about 4 mos ago with new stickers.
The TP300 is the 12" planer that has been around for a while and used to be known as the 22-540 before Delta created the Shopmaster line. There is a cutterhead lock to reduce snipe, but it is only a single speed. The 13" 22-580 has two speeds, but you're paying top dollar for it--about $410. The 22-540 used to go for around $270, so I think $220 is a good deal. However, I'm afraid I can't comment on the worthiness of this machine from personal experience.
Jeff, here's the page at Delta with all the specs on this planer:

If you rely on your planer and use it regularly, it might be better to stay away from the Shop Master (their new hobby line). My impression is that these tools are not designed for day in, day out use.

Jeff,
According to the Delta Guys that participate on another forum, these machines are the same as the older model numbers, just new numbers. That's all thats changed.

As stated by previous posters, Delta designated the Shop-master for their hobby line. It's the same planer they've had for awhile. If you give it heavy traffic, I agree with FG and think you should probaly up-grade to their industrial line if you can afford or if you can wait till you can.
I just recieved the Delta 22-580 2 speed. I'm not a die-hard Delta fan, especially with their low-end tools. This 22-580 is a nice piece of work. In all fairness, I haven't used it day in-day out yet. But from what I can tell so far, it was worth the extra $$ as it appears to be a winner.
Good Luck with whatever you decide..

Thanks to all for the advice. Think I'd better go with a heavier machine.

Bought a DeWalt this A.M. I'm not impressed with the plastic case, but it looks like a good machine. At $335 less a $50 rebate, I figured I couldn't go wrong.

Been busy in the shop. I think for the money with the rebate, you were wise. Everyone that has the DW planer seems to think it gets the job done. I almost went there, but had the extra money at the time and took the 22-580. I think we will both be satisfied in the end.
BTW, all the B/T's have a plastic casing. Not going to matter as the guts are the blue-collar end of the machine. Hope you enjoy the DW for years to come. With that safety yellow, you won't have any trouble keeping track of where you put it in the shop. he..he.. "Ole Yeller"
Enjoy..
