Could someone help me with what is probably an easy diagnosis. My 1995 vintage Unisaw with magnetic starter has developed a problem in that the motor will not keep running after switching on. It appears that the magnet that keeps the contact going no longer is able to hold. Will I need a new switch or can components be changed? Any ideas? Help please

Did you unplug, open up the switch box and check for sawdust accumulation?
The magnet is an electromagnet. If you have a meter, you could check the voltage on that circuit. Look for a broken wire or loose connection.
To all so far
Thanks for responses... The switch box was quite clean but just to be sure I blew it out with air aling with the motor and pulled the unit from the box to check for wiring issues. None found though I didn't check voltage. The issue still is there. What is interesting is that if I hold the start switch on long enough the contact stays good and the motor runs, however it shuts off if you put any load (a piece of wood) on it.

Could be the over current protection. Note where it is and turn it up and down a few times then set it back to the original setting and try it.
It sounds like the switch is failing, burned contacts or the electromagnet coil shorting out would give these symptoms. It is possible that the switch is detecting an overload condition and properly cutting out as it should, but the symptoms sound to me more like a switch problem. You can replace the components in the switch but it is usually simpler to get a new switch.
