Well I read all the posts and talked to everybody I know and made a decision. That lasted about 5 minutes after my “Wonderful Wife” heard about it. She said “Well why don’t you get the Powermatic since that’s what you said was really the best.”
I can’t stand it!!! I told her it was $400 bucks more and she said ” Yea but you will never have to buy another one again, right?”
I was grinning so hard my jaw hurt but I was trying not to jump up and down. I said fine I’ll do that. Folks sitting in my shop right now is a PM66 with extension table and legs and it is so pretty I want to sleep on it. The polish on the cast iron is like a mirror and the baldor motor comes up to speed in about 1 second with no vibration. Does anyone sense gloating here? Sorry fellas I can’t help myself. I’ll shutup for now but know that this beast is worth every penny! Another day I’ll tell you the adventure of getting a 640 lb saw out of a pickup and into the shop.
Thanks so much to all of you for your comments. They really helped me to understand what I really wanted and to think about the difference in “need” and “want”. In reality any of the 3 saws would have helped me produce my best work and wanting the PM is one of those intangibles that you zero in on one day and never can shake, kinda like Corvette owners. 🙂
Again Thanks
John

John Congratulations..... However, I've owned Corvettes, sleep with your wife, the benifits are much more substantial.

Envy is such an ugly emotion, don't you think. Well, I'm feeling ugly.
Congrats John
Its a great day when a tool finds a loving shop.

John,
Congrats, there really is nothing like the PM66! But I gotta agree, sleep with your wife ,the benefits are much better. Heck you ought to take that woman on a romantic weekend out of town somewhere. She actually suggested spending MORE money to get the exact tool you wanted. That is a keeper my friend!
Congrats on your new saw and an understanding wife. I've had 4 tablesaws over the last forty years.(and one wife) The first a used $40 dollar Sears 8" saw, next a $100. dollar used Sears 10" saw, next a new Delta $850.00 Contractor 10" saw which Delta took back after two years and refunded my money because the blade wouldn't stay lined up with the mitre slot. My last saw I bought was a Delta Unisaw 10" cost about $2300.00 with mobil base, tax, and deliverly charge and I love it, however I probably enjoyed the 40 dollar just as much 40 years ago. The most exciting thing I've bought for woodworking recently was a Forrest blade if you haven't tried one you might give it a shot. I've had one about 2 years and would pay twice the price if I had to for another one.
Good Luck, God Bless, Saw Safe

Thanks Les, I have had several myself. I started with an old saw when I was twelve that was actually my fathers. Don't know what brand it was. It and a joiner and a router. These were in a corner of the building my father had his business in and none if it was being used anymore so I asked if I could use them. It was a soft drink bottling company and I made the wooden cases to hold the returnable bottles. That dates me(middle 50's). Pretty ambious for a 12 years old as I think back about it. I even had to resaw the boards.
My next saw as an adult was also a Sears 8" which I learned to resent the 8" blades since evereything else was 10, but all in all not too bad a saw. Next I had a Ryobi BT3000 which was a fine saw but living in NC at the time it was underpowered for the rough cut lumber I was buying right out of the mill that was only a mile from home. Then I got a Powermatic 64A which was a really nice saw. The shop I had was a wooden floored one and the floor wouldn't support a cabinet saw. Now that I am back in Louisiana and have a concrete floor I wanted to get the cabinet saw and am as you know tickled pink with the PM66. Now if I can save up for the Bies splitter etc.. I will be good although the guard on the 66 is better than most I've seen since it has the sides independant of each other and that makes it nice to be able to lift one side to check where the blade will hit the wood.
Thanks and Good Luck
John
Yup, just like my wife said... "Honey, I want you to buy best equipment there is. If good equipment means you'll do good work, then you must have the best equipment. Don't worry about re-mortgaging or the kid's university fund, it's about time I went back to work again anyway."
Yeah and Happy Mother's Day too sweety... :)
Well that old green monster rears its ugly head again. First off I don't have any kids that are under 30. Second I am retired and my house is paid for. I worked my butt off all my life(actually only since I was 12). I'm sorry that you resent anyone who has worked hard all their lives and now finally can have some of the things they had to do without for 45 years. You know Frakker, all that resentment is stealing the pleasure out of your life. "You reap what you sow"
Still I wish you the best!

Hey sorry John, you misinterpretted my message. That was exactly what my wife said! I just couldn't do it. I will though, once I reach your stage of life. Enjoy yourself chum...
No Problem. I will pull for you too when you get to that point. We all need to realize our dream when we can.
Good Luck
John
