Greetings
Anybody seen a good plan or design for a quality TV cabinet/credenza for big flat panel TVs? The retail ones I see are either plastic/glass/steel or look like cheap knock-down quality furniture. I am looking for something that would be substantial and all-wood. Looks like armoires are obsolete.
Thanks

There is a very nice TV stand in the October 2008 issue of Fine Woodworking magazine. I see that you wanted one that was all wood and this one uses a great deal of plywood but I consider it wood.
We get to soon oldt und to late schmart
Depending on the look that you are after you may want to "think out of the box". Or at least put the TV out of the box.
Use a wall mount to mount the TV.
Then have a separate credenza/sideboard below the TV. The cable/satelite box, DVD, VCR, audio systems can either be on open selves or you have put them behind doors and use an IR repeater to control them. And some drawers for the DVD's etc.

Not to hijack the thread too far, but I am interested in ideas for making a flat screen TV disappear behind a credenza. My thought is to have various components (DVD, etc) in the credenza. I don't want to always look at the TV screen and building a tall cabinet wouldn't work where the TV needs to go. Basically I want to be able to lift the screen vertically from its hiding place behind the credenza when I want to watch something.
Ideas?
Thanks,
Randy

There is hardware to do what you want but I imagine you could build something from scratch, too. I'm sure you could do some sort of vertical lift where the TV comes up from the back portion of the cabinet with the other components in front of it. You might also consider a sort of lid so that the monitor stows face down. A couple of gas struts could be used to ease raising it up.
There is a very nice hidden flat screen in the "Gallery" perhaps ask the person that posted it for the lift mechanism he used?
"Lift" hardware is available - although it can get pretty expensive. My brother has a humongous credenza/hutch for his flat screen that has a really neat feature. The TV hides toward the front of the credenza and my SIL's knick knacks are arranged toward the back. The TV can be raised and lowered without having to move any of her "stuff". Great idea IMHO. - lol
A design modification that would have the TV flip up and thereby dump all of the knick knacks behind the credenza could be quite an improvement in some peoples' eyes. Of course, that depends on what you're trying to achieve.
I'll look around for lift hardware (maybe Rockler?) and see what I can find.

Since both my brother and I are politically correct, sensitive, caring, males who are oh-so in touch with our feminine side (ask our wives and kids if you don't believe ME - sheeesh!!), I'll ignore the part about dumping the knick knacks behind the furniture - even if that is almost irresistable the the macho, super stud, John Wayne, Conan the Barbarian, Dirty Harry, Darth Vader, et al, dark side that lives within us all. - LMAOAnd, if the knick knacks aren't bad enough, SWMBO absolutely insists on heaping a pile of pillows on the bed every day. Every night, I gotta toss five (yes, FIVE) of the @^@%^ things in the corner before I can hit the sheets. There WILL be changes after the revolution. - lol
DId you ask her for permission to have a revolution? It'd never fly in my house. :)
You could use a little dab of Gorilla glue to hold the knick knacks on the top so they don't slide down behind.
Ask her permission?? You gotta be kidding. I was born at night, but not LAST night!!Discretion is the better part of valor, but the dark side can dream, can't it? - lol
I know what you mean. Reminds me of The Man Song. lol
There WILL be changes after the revolution. - lol
I am sure there will be.
Every night, I gotta toss five (yes, FIVE) of the @^@%^ things in the corner before I can hit the sheets.
After the revolution, you will have to put each pillow into it's proper storage container (Labeled by color of the pillow). Tossing anything in the house will be not allowed under any circumstances... :>)
Some place I saw a TV over a fireplace. Which is too high for my opinion, but that is beside the point.Anyway the TV was fixed in place. But they had a paint that went over it. And the painting was one some track or glide behind it so that it would be slid up above the TV..

This months issue of Woodsmith had a modular design for it says a 42" flat screen TV. The top is 47" long so if you just build the base cabinet it should hold larger.
Thanks all. I will check out the Woodsmith and FWW (my subscription ran out in August, so I missed that one.) I am mostly interested in getting proportions right, and accounting for all the peripheral devices, cables, speakers, etc. I am considering the wall mount with credenza underneath, but want to see as many options as I can.
Thanks again.
My similar but different problem is finding plans for a corner TV stand. Must fit a 50" flat screen and, ideally, have space for a receiver and a DVD player. Space for remotes/DVDs and other "stuff" would be a bonus. Any ideas??
Here's one I designed and built for my parents.
thanks jt. Very nice.
All you need now is a DVD of a wood fire to play. Very nice work.

Thanks guys.
