All,
I’m trying to figure out if it makes any sense at all to modify the current plans I have for a shaker style double drop leaf table….and use the wood I have…or stick with the plans.
The table has double tapered legs with a double splay in the apron. The plans call for a 14″ wide x 36″ table top with 7 1/4″x36″ drop leaves….overall height 28 3/4″. I built this out of mahogany for the legs and cherry for the 5″aprons. I have an oil (Watco) finish on the base and currently just waiting to rub out with wax.
I have two mahogany boards that measure 7/8″x6 1/2″x80″ that I could cut up into 4 boards and a finishaed surface of about 3/4×6 1/4x 36″. That means the table top would measure only 12 1/2″ across and the leaves would be 6 1/4″….I’m concerned that the shortness of the apron might look stupid?
I’m also wondering if I ripped the drop leafs and slipped in a 1″ wide or so piece of another wood and glued up, and did the same with the top only maybe 2″ wide of the same wood …..would that work from a good look standpoint?
Or maybe I should just go buy some cherry and follow the plans? What do you all think?

It could easily look as if you'd made up the top out of scraps rather than a planned design decision.
An old design maxim is 'design from the handles back'. It means the handles or pulls weren't tacked on as an afterthought and were considered carefully early in the design process.
I think you should think of the top as one of the primary visible items rather than just making it 'fit'. Slainte.
Sgian,
Hmmmm.......that probably means you wouldn't like my alternative either....."checkerboard" top...lol.
No, your right (of course) ...I'll stick with the cherry...the correct dimensions.
Checker board could fill the bill, BG. But it has to look like you meant it-- that means it isn't a happy (or unhappy) accident. Slainte.RJFurniture
