I want to build bookcases on either side of an existing armoire/TV cabinet, giving the appearance of a single unit. The sides of the armoire have moldings at top, bottom and middle. How should I integrate the bookcases? Do I need to, or just leave gaps? The bookcases will be set back from the front of the armoire. Thanks. Todd

One solution is to build a pair of identical bookcases, leaving a gap. Then apply the same style of molding to cover the gap, adding it to both sides of each bookcase.
when Dusty stops by, he'll have a good suggestion, if you don't like mine.

Sounds like I would need to remove the current molding causing the gap. That's doable.
Without visuals your question is open to conjecture but impossible to answer. Design isn't about guessing, it's about finding realistic answers to a specific question.
