Design question for making custom closet doors
Hi,
I need to make 2 sets of closet doors for our bedroom. There are two openings which I need to make doors for both are 44″ W and 79-1/2″ high.
I cannot find any bi-fold or other std. doors at home center stores so I need to probably build some and I have some questions about that.
If there were just two panel doors per opening rougly 21-1/2″ W each and 79″ high, then I’m concerned about the stability of a panel door that size. Concerned about it warping.
For on opening this size, would it just be better to make these into bi-fold doors so each would be about 10-1/2″ each? I have not built bi-folds before, but could certainly learn.
Any pointers to building these doors would be appreciated.
thanks much for advice you can offer.

If you use properly dried, quality lumber, that has acclimated to your houses MC (moisture content) properly, you shouldn't have any problems. It'll be important for you to choose flat stock for good results. Stock preperation is the critical step in avoiding problems in the future, along with proper joinery.
You do not need to divide that opening into 4 sections. 2 will suffice.

follow up on building closet doors
Hi Jeff,
thanks for your reply. Due to the width of these doors I am wondering if the width of the styles and rails should be on the order of 1-1/2 to 2".
Is this a good start for the design?
I've built one full size door before and used mortise and tenon joints which is probably what I'd use here.
thanks
