All,
I’m in the process of building the attached desk (36x30x28h)for my daughter out of Mahogany. Last night with the m&t finished for the legs and aprons I did a dry fit to see how the proportions looked and get some final measurements for the slats. The upper Aprons are 5″, the lower 3″ with the legs at 2″x1 1/2″. I’m kinda concerned that the front legs have adequate lateral support to withstand the punishment that will be required. I’m thinking maybe a small shelf (8″xabout 32″) from lower apron to lower apron would provide additional support to the front legs…however a long stretch to hold books and not sag….also has to not get in way of feet…
Can anyone suggest a better idea to add support to the front legs?….or am I worried for nothing? thanks

BG ,
You are probably worried for nothing , but , the photo shows a small shelf below , could you make that shelf a few inches deeper ? If not that, perhaps you could add a few Craftsman style corbels under the drawer area in each corner to tie it all together. I have placed the brackets or corbels on the sides of the legs and allow the top to overhang them. You can place them on each leg also .
good luck dusty
dusty,
I would have never seen that shelf if you hadn't pointed it out...thanks. The corbels are a great idea too. Now I need to think some more...
I'm used to the strength of an oak M&T...
