I thought other beginning designers could benefit from this information. I
was interested in purchasing the design software DESIGNCAD 3D MAX V14 after
reading the article titled CAD on a Budget in the October 2004 issue of
Fine
Wood Working. I found the software being sold by
http://store.purplus.net/imde3dmax.html for ONLY $32.95, which includes
shipping! So like many of us that are on strict budgets, this is a great
buy. I hope this information is helpful to fellow wood workers.

Type again?
I tried the URL, even adding a "www.", and it wouldn't work for me.
Splinty,
Those are the Wrong W's at the Wrong place at the Wrong time....(hehe)...try again as is without adding anything...
Try again, Splintie, it worked fine for moi. Now, if I can just find that $32.95, LOL!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Thanks...tried a different browser and it worked/
Ran,
Thanks for the lead on this. The link was fine and I placed my order.
I'm sure the price is reduced because v15 was released and now the v14 package is 'surplus' merchandise. I've been practicing with the downloaded demo and I'm satisfied with what it will be capable of doing -- if I can successfully transition from the software I've been using! Something about old dogs and new tricks!!!

Great bargain if it ships with the three tutorial CD's. Please let us know.
I bought version 15, which does not. Tutorial CD's now sell separately at $50 each. The mini-tutorial which it does include was not enough to get me started. I feel ripped off.

Dan,
A couple of weeks ago, I downloaded v15 from the IMSI site to try it out and discovered it had no tutorial included. Later that day, I found a download site where I could get v14 which includes a tutorial. I don't know how comprehensive it is, but the first parts I have completed are satisfactory.

Do you still have that site address for the designcad 3d max v14 tutorial?
Ed,
Please forgive my delay in responding to your note about the site from which I downloaded v14. Believe it or not, I can't find it! When I did a Goggle search a couple of weeks ago, I was able to go right to a site that had it for download. Now, I simply can't find that site even with the same search criteria. I'll keep digging around and see what I can find.

Bill, Thanks Ill keep looking, if I find it I will let you know.
I suspect that the package being sold @ $32.95 (retail $60) does not include the tutorials. I believe that the package that included the tutorials sold for $100 retail. As I recall, they sold the program both with and without the tutorials.
Might want to call and find out for sure that the tutorials are in the package.
I just received a note back from Purplus confirming that the version of DesignCAD v14 that they are selling at $35 does NOT contain tutorial disks.Howie.........
Wow! Thanks for the heads up. I'll make sure when I get ready to purchase the program that it includes the tutorial disks.

Try this link directly to the software publishers site. They are advertising version 14 as the new version. You can download a 30 day trial of the 3D Plus Max version 13 at this location. It comes in three flavors, typical, full and compact.. Choose the one that is right for you and your connection speed. I'm pulling down the full version (70+ mb) and I'll give a review when I get done playing with it.

Actually, the publisher's site is http://www.imsisoft.com/faminfo.asp?fam=2. In addition, both the publisher's site and the site you reference are touting the new version 15. You can download a 30 day preview version from either.
However, the issue is whether the $85 package includes the two training disks that were in the version 14 package. When I spoke to IMSIsoft, they told me that there was a single tutorial disk in the v15 package. The rep said it contained the same info as in the two tutorial disks that were in the v14 package. But, he was not able to tell me why they have two v15 tutorial disks for sale @$50 each on their web site.
Contributing to the confusion is that DesignCAD is sold in two versions. One just contains the program and minimal instructions. The second version is DesignCAD 3D MAX v15 Plus. The "Plus" version is the one that contains the tutorial disk and sells for about $50 more than the program only package. It was the "Plus" version that was tested for the FWW article.
So, I don't know what is in the v15 "Plus" package.

Now it gets really confusing.... I bought DesignCad 3D Max v15 (no plus) at Frys for $79.00. It came with one tutorial disk. That tutorial contained "Chapter 1" and "Chapter 2", each lasting about 15 minutes. They were not very useful, and only covered 2D drawing.
There are a lot of other files on the disk, but none of them seem to be tutorials.
What I did find useful, however, is a link to the users group website under the "HELP" menu. It has quite a few user-submitted tutorials, which helped me get started. There is enough user support that I don't recommend shelling out the extra $$$ for the tutorial CD's. Especially if they are as anemic as the enclosed one.
Regards,
Dan
Dan, I agree it's all very confusing. I even added to it. There apparently is no "Plus" version for v15. V14 came in both a standard and a "Plus" where the "Plus" contained the two tutorial disks.
I am going to try to get a clarification from the software publisher. I just don't understand why they sell a two disk set on their website as a standalone product but then say that the software package contains one disk with all the same tutorial content.Howie.........
