I would like to build a comfortable desk chair. I’ve already built a fleet of Adirondaks and a flotilla of diningroom chairs, but have yet to make a simple desk chair. Any suggestions?

I thought about posting a one word answer: Don't.
but I figured that isn't the kind of suggestions you are looking for. The tricky thing about an office chair is that it needs to be comfy for long periods of work. Generally speaking, with office chairs, function is more important than form. That is, make it useful versus pretty. Just about everything should be adjustable; seat, back, arms, height, etc.
Not sure if you are planning to have any metal pieces on it or not. Or if you are planning to do the metal bashing on your own, or buying the base and hydraulics. Which brings me to my "suggestion". I've thought about making an office chair as well. I wondered if the right approach would be to go to a used furniture store, buy a cheap chair, take it to the shop and replace the seat, arms and back with a wood one of my own construction.
Good luck with whatever design / process you choose.
Thank you for your excellent advice. As a retired teacher, I recall leaning back in my adjustable office chair and stretching many times throughout the day. You make a good point about just such flexibility.
