I am completing the construction of a writing desk (desktop is approximately 2.5′ x 4′) with a padauk top and cherry base and drawers. I’ve seen conflicting opinions on the correct or best way to finish a desktop that will have drawers directly below it.
On the one hand it makes sense that whatever type of finish you apply to the top of the desktop should also be applied to its underside in order to minimize differences in the moisture content between these two faces. Since it will see some significant use, I would be inclined to apply a simple and durable finish. But if I apply an oil-based finish to the top, won’t this result in an unpleasant odor whenever the drawers are opened? More importantly, won’t it make the drawers more difficult to operate? (I’ve fitted the drawers quite accurately. Not much slop in these drawers!)
I should say too that I do not have any spray equipment, so I’m restricted to finishes that can be applied by rag, brush or cloth.
While I’m on the topic, what do people usually use for finishes for the drawers themselves? I’ve heard some people mention shellac (orange or blond?) with a little lemon oil added. Does anyone have any secret recipes they want to divulge?
Thanks,
Tim

Tim;
Use shellac, blonde or orange depending on the color your looking for. The orange will have a tendancy to darken the finish a bit.
Start with a thin 1# cut and put on a seal coat. Then two more 3# cut coats and two or three coats of wax, buffed between coats.
The nice thing about shellac is that it drys fast and can usually be sanded and recoated at least once in a single day. Put in a little longer day and you can get three coats on.
I use those little foam sanding pads, (the ones about a 1/4" thick) to sand between coats. If you have a small defect, just put a little more in that area and sand it down. The shellac sands easy and finishes nice with the wax. ( I use BriWax)
As for the drawers, do the same thing. Tape your glue joints and put on at least the seal coat before assembly, then do the final coats after assembly. The ladies really like this type of finish on the drawers they store their nylons in (no snags).
Good Luck
