I am in the market for a plunge router. I have an old Crapsman 1.5hp router I use in a router table. It works fine as a fixed base router, but it will only accept a Crapsman edge guide, a piece of horribly made plastic junk that simply does not work. The one thing I’ve never liked about routers is the incredible quantity of sawdust they spew. The new Dewalt 2hp has the integral dust collection port they claim will suck up 95% of sawdust when hooked up to a shop vac. Anyone have one of these things? Opinions? Will standard Dewalt attachments like an edge guide work with this router?

Have you had a chance to look at the Porter Cable 7529. I have one and love it. I also bought the PC mico adjust guide that works fantastic. They also come in a kit that includes a case and the guide. The guide works so well that I also bought one for my 7518 just in case I ever take it out of the table again.

Steve,
The combination fixed/plunge base boxed sets look great, and I know Porter Cable has a great rep, but do they make a router with dust collection? Does anyone besides Dewalt?
The 7529 is a dedicated plunge with all of the amenities including dust collection. It's a 2hp variable speed, soft start and quiet for a router.Steve - in Northern California
The Dewalt is a very nice router that has the best plunge of all my routers, which is a big plus when doing precise work. I like it better than the PC plunge because it is smaller and lighter allowing for better control. For a little more money you can get a kit from Makita or Bosch (both very very good routers). You get a fixed base for your table and a plunge for hand use.
For what it's worth, I think you can get metric threaded rod through Reid Tool Co, a machinists tool and supply catalog. I have ordered metric stuff from them a few times.
I have the Dewalt and am well pleased with it. I've never tried PC's plunge and so can't speak to it, but their 690 was my first router and i wouldn't part with it. I don't think you'd be disappointed with either.

Pretty useful tool, can't wreck mine.
