From looking through previous posts it looks like the general concensus is that the new 735 planer from DeWalt is the best benchtop going? Would most people agree at this point now that it has been out for a little while?
If so, what would be the next best planer out there and is the 735 worth the extra hundred or so over most of the competitor’s benchtops? I’m dragging my feet since I am not sure if I want/need to spend the extra $$ given that I am just getting started setting up a basic shop.
I see a lot of them (735) available reconditioned (factory) and I wonder if that was a result of so many breaking the plastic gear that there was so much talk about. Did they ever get that issue taken care of?
thanks, Jake

Well, the answer doesn't matter anyway since I picked up a 22-580 new for $300 today. I figured the $150-200 saved over the Dewalt 735 would be worth the DC not being as good since I am only a hobbyist. Hopefully I made a good choice. I probably can't make the 735 work any better than a cheap planer for that mater. We'll see how it goes. Wish me luck, hopefully I don't create a bunch of overpriced barrels of sawdust.

Look at Amazon.com and Toolking.com for reconditioned 735's, I think they are in the $300 to $350 range. I don't know if you mind the visual defects that they will come with but the warranty and functionability should be the same.
