Any advice on dust collection for a dw 735 that can accommodate a 30 gallon fiber drum? The manual says a dw735 shouldn’t be used with separate a dust collector because of the blower.

I used to blow my chips into a 45 gallon drum using the dewalt accessory and bag - I just had it clinched over the garbage can so the bag became a lid sort of.
Then I decided to blow them right outside because I live in the woods and can get away with that. It works perfectly - I have a blast gate in the wall and I just connect and plane away!
I then just rake the sawdust once in a while as it makes a big pile eventually.
I do the same. Benefits of living in the woods
The blower will move the chips, but is not designed for back pressure. A cyclone or disc-style seperator on top of the drum should work, but will not solve the fine dust issue because the drum can't be sealed. You'll need a filter with substantial surface area on the back end of the system, unless you can vent it out of the building like MuskokaLayne. Keeping airflow high will be the key.
I had my 735 ported to my 6" dust collector run, which ran through a Clearvue Cyclone... worked very well; previously, it was ported to a 4" run into a Oneida Super Dust Deputy.
The 735 blower will exhaust the chips with substantial force; but having the output blow into any non-sealed system (a dust bin, for example) - short of an outdoor vent - is simply a mess.
Does it say that you (a) shouldn't or (b) don't need to use auxiliary dust collection? I have a dust collector connected to mine, and it seems to do a great job, but am I harming the planer by doing so?
I hook my Rockler cyclone upto the 735 and connect my shop vac to the cyclone. Works great, shocked it hasn't clogged yet.
735 hooked to a DC for years. No issues. Blower still blows.
I have had mine connected to my dust collection system for almost 15 years. Works fine but you really need to turn on the DC before the planer or you get all sorts of back pressure.
Agreed - over a decade with 735 hooked to DC system. Works better than nearly any other tool in terms of reducing chips and dust.
