Just purchased a DeWalt 735 thickness planer from Woodcraft for $425.00. It seems to work great but I was really pleasantly surprised by its internatl dust collection system. It has a fan that sends the chips out the back port. The fan really seems to be industrial strength. I attach a dust bag of some kind ( I actually used an old laundry bag) and it collected all the chips. Didn’t have any get loose in the shop. Its great to get a feature like this on a machine that actually works. But I have a question. This is my first planer. Have always used hand planes. I am getting a little snipe and would like any suggestions about how to tune the planer to minimize the snipe. I also bought the optional extended tables front and back. Thanks for any comments.

If you set the end of the outfeed table a tad bit high (maybe 1/16"), this will help keep the the end of the piece that's still under the rollers from raising up into the cutter as it exits. Supporting the piece as it goes in helps too.

Frank,
Do you have the outfeed table extensions?
I got them when I purchased the machine, and haven;t had any problems with snipe.
As mentioned above, the extension tables are pretty crucial to minimizing snipe. At the price you paid, sounds like maybe you didn't get them?
forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Pick up the in-feed and out-feed tables and set the outer edges high. Also, when you feed the material in hold upward pressure on the back of the material as it passes under the infeed roller and untill the outfeed roller picks it up. As the material exits, again hold upward presser as it passes the infeed roller and until it passes past the cutting head. Hope you can follow what I am saying. I always plain just short of thickness and then run my material through a drum sander.
I got the infeed and outfeed tables but they were extra. Thanks for all the good information. I'll deep working at it.
