Hello,
I am in the process of setting up my shop. I’m somewhat of a novice and have spent more time reading than actually doing. Anyhow, I’m looking to spend about 700 for a table saw. I can get a discount on the Dewalt for that price. The other saw I’m considering the contractor version of the General. I will likely run it with 220 1phase.
Any major objections to the Dewalt saw?

As an owner I can say I love the saw, I talked one of my colleagues into the saw and he is very happy too. There are some glitches, Dust collection isn't the greatest. But when I get around to enclosing the bottom and back and add a 4" port for my dust collector the problem will be solved. The 1 3/4 HP is OK for my use. With full kerf blades I have no problem with 8/4 maple, slower yes, but get the job done. A 3HP cabinet saw would have been nice but the "War Department" set the budget. The fence scale is dead on and fence lock down is very stable, no need to measure and mark then cut. I got the outfeed table and it the best add on I could have gotten. The Casting for the trunion is one solid piece front to back unlike the jet hybred and most contractor saws which have long bolts which hold the front trunion to the back trunion. Rewiring it to 240Volt was easy. I did upgrade to an Incra miter gauge and a Betterly O-clearance insert. But most factory miter gauges should be tossed anyway. Also it's a USA made product even the motor ( Marathon ) All of the stops were factory set and dead on. If adjustment is needed for the 90 of 45 degree stops it is easily done from the top of the table with an allen key. The tilt and height adjustment is very smooth and also the height adj. handle is much lower than on a contractor saw so you won't be banging your knuckles. FYI the Jet hybred has the contractor style trunions and the blade height adjustment has a very small cog belt drive so the handle can be lowered on the front of the cabinet. I compared the Jet and DeWalt very closely and chose the DeWalt. DeWalt Engineers MUST be woodworkers.

Hey Bruce,
So today is Father's day and low and behold, the DeWaltaclaus came early and in a big way. I just got my DW746 today. It apparently was shipped to a buddy's house last month and somehow made into my garage last night without me knowing, very cool.
Anyhow, first glance is impressive. The unit was purchased from Grainger and they did a good job of not tearing the box up significantly. Higher headquarters says I can use the day to put it together but remembered your feedback and wanted to take a quick look to see what was said.
I pretty much agree with everything said given only a visual inspection. I'm surprised dust collection is given such remarks given the shroud design. Also, since there is a shroud around the blade, not sure what side walls would much do. Perhaps creating a better shroud seal would be more effective? I'd be interested in your thoughts if you were able to hook up a 4inch DC.
I'll be sure to visit your website to get paste wax, blades, and what not. So thanks again for the feedback.
Regards,
Alex
I also looked around and ended up with the Dewalt. Got it all save the out feed table. The sliding table is great but the "osbourn" style gauge is too small and solid one way and too flexable the other way. Standard fence is fine (better if two sided) Plenty of power from the motor, almost any 1/2" material will work for a zero clearance insert. 52" rails are really 50" of use. The standard blade works great. Would I buy again? Yes but would look at the sawstop basic model as well.
