First time purchase of a scroll saw. Debating between Dewalt 788 ($399) and the new Dremel 18″ saw ($239 Home Depot) . I’ve read both good and bad about the Dewalt 788 but nothing about the new Dremel. Any suggestions?

I would stay away from the Dremel -- they tend to be over-priced and under-designed. My first scroll saw was a Dremel, total waste of money. Last year, I made a bunch of Christmas ornaments and went saw shopping. The features on the Dremel were seriously behind the curve. I've also heard through one of the scrolling forums that the vibration factor in their saws is considerable (consistent with my earlier experience). They should have stuck with their little rotary gizmo, IMO.
I ended up with a little Delta Shopmaster saw that works just great. Delta makes good scroll saws, and you can go up the ladder from the Shopmaster without breaking the bank. Their quick-release blade tensioner and easy-to-change blade system are well thought-out and take the agony out of interior cutting.
If you want another place to go for first-hand reports on the DeWalt, try
http://www.justwoodworking.com . Go to their forums and then to the Scrolling forum. It's a very active place with several pros and I'm sure you'll find info on the DeWalt there. You'll also see references to a couple other scrolling forums that are even more active than JWWing.
