Dewalt DW734 Planer: Aftermarket Blades?
I recently picked up a used Dewalt DW734 12 1/2″ planer. I would like to start with a fresh set of knives. Should I use Dewalt’s or is there a better product out there?
If you have any other tips, I’d like to hear them . . . as long as they aren’t that I should have bought the [insert your favorite planer here], instead.
Thanks,
Danny

Danny,
I have the DW 735 and so far (400 bf) I haven't had any issues with the knives although many others will paint a different tale. Guess I got lucky? Can't speak for DW knives for the 734.
Anyway, several frequent flyers in here have suggested Infinity for replacement knives.

Have a look.

A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
I have also not had any problems with the Dewalt knives. Like Bob, I have run around 500 bd ft without replacing the knives.

Great. Thanks for the feedback, Bob and Josh. I'll give the Dewalt set a go and may try the Infinity later.
Re: DeWalt DW734 Planer Knives, the cheapest I found was at Amazon.com for about $45 for the set of three knives and they are DeWalt brand. I was going to try Infinity since I saw them referenced in a woodworking magazine but they were almost twice as much.
Since I've bought them I read that even though they say they are disposible and cannot be sharpened, you can sharpen or hone them and infact the article recommended this even before you use them like you would a new chisel or plane iron when you get a new one.
Has anyone had any experience with improving the sharpness of these blades? My concern is that since there is no height adjustment for the blades on the cutterhead (they have a pin that sets them in the correct position) that maybe you should not do this. I was planning on trying it though when I remove the set thats currently in now and see if this will work. Seems logical to me that even if there is no adjusting possible that you ought to be able to clean up the edge a time or two anyway.
Infinity tools blades price is expensive, a new brand FOXBC planer blades .
approx $26 sets.

Jawsohio, You said: "My concern is that since there is no height adjustment for the blades on the cutterhead (they have a pin that sets them in the correct position) that maybe you should not do this."
This is not true. My 734 has a pair of magnetic "jigs" for setting the blades. I frequently remove my 734 blades, clean them and hone them, and put them back using the "jigs". Works perfectly. I've had my 734 for more than 5 years and have run many many BF through it. I'm still using the original blades.
@bilyo - Your DW734 knives must mount differently than the one I had. If the knives are not on the alignment pins the clamp will not seat correctly.
I have the 734 and use the Dewalt blades. They’ve been ok but considering upgrading as I find I have to take very light passes.
I have the 733, and the blades have to sit on the pins also. I suspect you could hone them and put them back, but if you took too much off, they wouldn't project far enough.
Old blades are useful. I cut bits off with an abrasive cutoff wheel and use them for marking knives, scratch stocks, etc.
I have a Dewalt 735 but I assume that the 734 also has double edge blades. So you can most likely remove the installed blades and flip them over to expose the other edge. With some luck that side maybe unused.
I eventually went to the high speed steel Infinity blades but didn't see a huge difference in quality or longevity.
Jawsohio, Sorry. I just realized that mine is the DW733 not 734. It has only two blades, but they are easily adjusted using the magnetic "jigs".
i with order DW734 from JTEX replacement blades, they are sharp and great.
