I am restoring a 1947 DeWalt 12″ GP radial arm. Question is, on the left side of the arm about 3″ back from the end cap there is about a 1/2 X 1″ rectangle missing from the casting, the back vertical has a 1/2 radius to it. This is NOT a broken out piece, as you can see the rough casting marks.
Any ideas as to why it’s there ? I have seen the same “defect” on pictured GP’s at OWWM

the gap
I've not seen the saw, Bruce, but is it possible it's the opening to allow the head to swing into "rip" position?
GP
I'll have to check that thought out, once I get her back together. Right now it's in a hundred pieces, and each piece is being wire brushed or sanded to new condition, even down to individual screws, and primed then a new paint job.
Sure have a great deal of appreciation now for the engineers that designed the beast. There are so many finely machined parts, the cost to replicate it today would be way out of anybodys reach. My guess would be near $3000.

I have a DeWalt GW, almost the exact same as the GP. The slot you are referring to acts as a safety to ensure that after you lift the rip rotator pin and rotate the head accordingly, then the pin must be fully and properly seated prior to returning the head back to the fence. If you notice, there is a small bent clip that is underneath the rotator pin's knob; that clip is just a little under the dimensions of the slot. But it's not without fault... at least on my machine, when passing by the slot, the clip is easy to spin to the opposite side, allowing you to raise the rotator pin anywhere along the arm.
Be sure to post some pics of your restore both here and over at OWWM.

Your correct too.
I got it figured out while putting it back together after priming and painting the beast. The original owner must have had the carriage off and put it back together wrong. Now all of the "swivel lock" pins work like a charm.
I painted up the table legs and platform, rear post(painted section), and arm a "Jet" cream and the leavers, rear post cap, motor, blade guard and yoke gloss black. If I ever get some spare change, I'm thinking of getting the leavers nickel plated, is that too over the top? ;-) I think i'll skim plane the original oak top and put on a sacrificial 3/8" slab of MDF.
I'm just about done with the excepiton of installing the deck and that looks like it is going to be fun !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then tuning her up to be true and square.
radial saw
I have a machine just like yours in excellent working order. I figure three thousand is about right as far as value is concerned. Mine is for sale because I have it in storage and don't have enough space to put it in my shop. I live in Indianapolis If if you know anyone who wants a saw like this let me know..
