Hi guys. I’ve got a problem with my Dewalt 733 planer. I wondered if someone more mechanically adept than me (everyone) has any ideas where to start.
The problem is when I am running stock through the planer it keeps stopping momentarily. There’s a clunking noise and the stock stops moving for less than a second then carries on for a few seconds and clunks again. Every time it clunks, the motor jumps a bit. Doesn’t sound nice at all and leaves marks on the wood. The motor itself seems to keep running. It only happens when I’m feeding wood through & the heaviness of the cut or the species of wood don’t make any difference.
I thought maybe the cutterhead was jamming due to dull knives, so I’ve had them sharpened and that didn’t help. I’m pretty sure it’s in the feed roller mechanism. Has anyone run into this problem, and if so, what did you do? It’s a 50 mile drive to the service centre if I can’t fix it myself and I hate to waste my “valuable” time.
Thanks

Sorry to hear you're having planer problems and wish I could offer some direct advice. Out of curiousity, have you called Dewalt about this?
That sounds pretty bad. I would hand that off to the service center. Is that the new model? If so, it should be under warentee.

No, I've had it for a couple of years. It's been a great machine up till now.
Have you tried cleaning the rollers?
No, I haven't done anything yet. I've got nothing on today so I'll open it up and have at it. How hard can it be, right? Now where's my hammer?
A fellow hammer user. I have two hammers that I use in tool repair. 21 oz for getting it there and a 16 oz for fine adjustment. Anything smaller won't cut it.

Hi Jimmy about a year ago a good friend of mine called me and told me he busted up his DeWalt planner pretty good all kinds of noises and clunks and he only was planning a 3in by 11 in by 8 foot piece of walnut, so I stopped by and took a look . I maybe classified a bit mechanical but it was pretty easy, Take the top off (just some screws) and you will see a drive belt (you should have a spare it came with the planner or orded a new one.) Replace the drive belt I am sure you have stripped out a tooth or two. also check all the other parts while your in there. I had to change two bushings for my buddy also, If you have more problems write me and I could call my buddy he had drawings and part numbers
